On January 27, 1990, twenty-one LOVELY women did something extraordinary that would forever changes the lives of many. These women, formerly known as the Diamond States Pearls Interest Group, took a pledge from former North Atlantic Regional Director Idell Pugh and former International President Janet Ballard, and established the Sigma Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated in Newark, Delaware.

As the third graduate chapter in the state of Delaware to be established, these women wasted no time getting down to business, and their legacy still lives on today. The newly established 501(c)(3) charitable arm of Sigma Zeta Omega chapter was named after these women and we are proud to serve the community through Diamond State Pearls, Incorporated which every member of the chapter is a part of.
Seven illustrious Presidents have led the chapter since its inception:
Norma J. Jackson (1990-1992)
Debra J. Spence (1993)
Dr. Jacquita L. Wright-Henderson (1994-1998)
Dr. Yvonne Barnett (1999-2002)
Sylvia Roberts (2003-2006)
Kimberly M. Collins (2006-2008)
Tiffany Matthews (2008-present)
Under these outstanding leaders, the chapter developed and implemented many extraordinary programs. These programs earned them numerous honors and awards, among which are three “President of the Year” awards, THREE “Chapter of the Year” awards, an achievement award, and numerous financial gifts from the DuPont Company and Aetna, Delaware Physician Care, Incorporated for excellence in mentoring.
Sigma Zeta Omega Chapter provides programs and community service projects to advance the purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. Through the years, as the needs of our community and political issues have changed, the chapter has provided exceptional programs, many of which are now offered annually such as the AKAette Scholarship Program, Emerging Young Leaders Program, Voter Registration, Tree Planting, Highway Cleanup, MLK Day of Service, Saving Our Sisters/Saving Ourselves with Beautiful Gate Outreach Center, Food Bank of Delaware and Pink Goes Red with the American Heart Association.

Collins, the hard work of Styna LeCompte, and the support from chapter members, Sigma Zeta Omega chapter initiated 25 intelligent, hard-working young ladies into the sorority via Epsilon Nu chapter. The chapter works closely with Lincoln University to maintain a strong presence of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
